Promoting Good Health, Early Prevention, and Uplift

Healthy Men. Healthy Families. Healthy Community.

Why Health Initiatives Matter

Good health is the foundation for everything else we hope to build: strong families, thriving careers, and a community that can lift itself up. Yet too many of our neighbors face serious health conditions without warning. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and sickle cell disease weigh especially heavily on Black families, and too often they are discovered late, when treatment is harder and outcomes are worse.

The good news is that much of this can be changed. Regular screenings, knowing your numbers, and talking openly about health can catch illness early, when it is most treatable. Prevention saves lives, and it starts with awareness.

That is why the Health Initiatives Program is one of the mandated programs of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Every chapter is called to carry this work into its own community, and the Gamma Rho Chapter takes that call seriously on the Westbank of Greater New Orleans.

The Role of the Fraternity and Our Chapter

Guided by our Cardinal Principle of Uplift, Gamma Rho brings health resources directly to the people we serve.

Raise Awareness

We use our platform to start honest conversations about health, from breast cancer to sickle cell disease, so no one has to face these issues alone or uninformed.

Encourage Prevention

We urge Brothers, families, and neighbors to get regular checkups and screenings, know their numbers, and act early, because early detection saves lives.

Show Up and Support

We give blood, honor survivors, and stand beside families in the fight, turning the Fraternity's mandate into real service in our community.

Annual Blood Drive

June 13, 2026

A record number of donor turned out, the highest in chapter history, under the leadership of Bro. Juwon Chambers and the Blood Drive Committee. The donations supported a young man who was first person in Louisiana to undergo a stem cell procedure to treat his sickle cell anemia, a treatment that carries the potential for a lifelong cure.

Relay for Life

2026 · Breast Cancer Awareness

Gamma Rho wore pink and rallied the community in the fight against breast cancer. The chapter honored 2026 Cancer Survivor Awardee Keisha Seward, who shared her journey of faith and courage since her 2023 diagnosis, and presented her with a monetary gift as the chapter keeps the Seward family in prayer.

Know Your Numbers. Get Screened. Live to Uplift.

Brothers, take the lead: schedule your annual checkup, and encourage the people you love to do the same. Mammograms, blood pressure checks, and blood sugar screenings take only a little time, and they can add years to a life.
